Point Loma

A journal of San Diego

On the peninsula’s western edge, Sunset Cliffs offers a landscape-led perspective on access, habitat and coastal public space.

Our Point Loma guide begins at Sunset Cliffs, the resource-based park along the peninsula’s western edge. The City distinguishes a linear section beside Sunset Cliffs Boulevard from a larger hillside conservation area.[5] That distinction is a useful reminder that a coastal neighborhood contains different types of landscape, not one interchangeable stretch of waterfront.

Consult the City’s park information and posted conditions when planning a visit. Stay on designated routes, respect barriers and remain well back from bluff edges; this guide does not assess cliff stability or recommend access to caves. Our article uses the City’s historical hillside-project scope to explain the relationship between trail planning and habitat restoration, without presenting its 2018 schedule as current construction news.[6]
